{"id":12057,"date":"2026-04-28T15:43:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-28T13:43:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bdl-ip.com\/?p=12057"},"modified":"2026-04-28T15:43:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T13:43:08","slug":"integration-of-ai-tools-into-the-epos-workflows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bdl-ip.com\/zh-hans\/integration-of-ai-tools-into-the-epos-workflows\/","title":{"rendered":"Integration of AI tools into the EPO\u2019s workflows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Minutes of oral proceedings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As part of a <span style=\"color: #013ca6;\"><a style=\"color: #013ca6;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epo.org\/en\/legal\/official-journal\/2025\/04\/a32\">pilot project launched in May 2025<\/a><\/span>, the EPO has progressively rolled out the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to assist in drawing up the minutes of oral proceedings (OP) across all Examining Divisions, Opposition Divisions, the Receiving Section and the Legal Division.<\/p>\n<p>The divisions have reported improved linguistic consistency, a clearer and more homogeneous document structure, as well as faster production of transcripts and minutes.<\/p>\n<p>In light of these positive results, the EPO has decided to extend this practice <span style=\"color: #013ca6;\"><a style=\"color: #013ca6;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epo.org\/en\/legal\/official-journal\/2026\/03\/a18\">to the Unitary Patent Division as of 1 April 2026<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What AI tools are used to draft the minutes?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The preparation of the minutes begins with an audio recording of the OP via the videoconferencing system. A first AI tool generates an automatic transcription of the audio. This transcription is then processed by a second AI tool, which produces a draft of the minutes. The competent division reviews and corrects the content and retains full legal responsibility for it.<\/p>\n<p>The EPO specifies that audio recordings and their transcriptions are not included in the file and are deleted once the minutes have been sent to the parties.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other AI-assisted tasks at the EPO<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The drafting of minutes forms part of a broader action plan launched by the EPO in 2024, in line with an <span style=\"color: #013ca6;\"><a style=\"color: #013ca6;\" href=\"https:\/\/link.epo.org\/web\/about-us\/transparency-portal\/en-epo-ai-policy.pdf\">AI policy implemented in 2025<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>This action plan aims to progressively integrate artificial intelligence into as many tasks as possible, although all final decisions remain the responsibility of EPO staff, who bear full responsibility for them.<\/p>\n<p>AI is currently used at several levels:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>pre-classification, classification and reclassification of patent applications, to better manage the growing number of technical fields,<\/li>\n<li>search, to identify relevant prior art more quickly, and<\/li>\n<li>the automated allocation of files to examiners, to balance workloads according to areas of technical expertise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The EPO has also announced a strategic collaboration with Mistral AI, a leading European AI company, resulting in the development of a new optical character recognition (OCR) solution specifically tailored to patent applications. This initiative addresses a key challenge in the patent field: the processing of large volumes of complex multilingual documents, including formulas, chemical structures, images, tables and sequence listings.<\/p>\n<p>By relying on technology developed in Europe, the EPO ensures that sensitive patent data is processed in compliance with European legal and ethical frameworks.<\/p>\n<p>The gradual integration of AI within the EPO thus marks a significant shift in its working methods, combining efficiency gains with improved quality, whilst maintaining the essential human oversight that ensures legal certainty and the reliability of decisions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Minutes of oral proceedings As part of a pilot project  [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[315],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-12057","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-ip-news-zh-hans"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
